ANDREY KAVETSKY

Was born in 1963 in Pestyaky village, Ivanovo Region and spent his childhood in the Ukraine. Since 1971 he has been living in Kaliningrad. He started to work with amber in the mid 1990s. From 2001 to 2002 he took a painting course. Since 1999 he has participated in exhibitions. He is the Grand Prix winner of the First Regional Amber Goods Contest.

Andrey Kavetsky is one of the leading amber carvers in Kaliningrad. He has created hundreds of figures of people and animals full of lambent humor, conventionalized models of ships and cars, refined cameos and intaglios. Being an impassioned collector and connoisseur of amber inclusions, A. Kavetsky quite often decorates his works with them. The artist skillfully combines such materials as wood, bone, whalebone with amber or he encrusts his works with the amber insertions of contrasting colors. He never creates ‘on the motifs of other artists or periods’, he never imitates masterpieces of the past and never borrows other’s images, relying completely on his own imagination. All the characters created by him (from ‘a frog on one leg’ to ‘praying Joseph’) feature masterly carving that doesn’t hide their living spirit. Having been able to breathe a spark of life into his creations, Kavetsky is perhaps the only modern artist who has managed to reveal the secret of amber – the energy and life hidden in the ancient resin.
